About KZK

Kristen Zory King is a writer, teaching artist, yoga instructor, and creative consultant based in Washington, DC. 

 

Kris is a seven time recipient of a DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Fellowship, a two time recipient of a DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Project Grant, a 2023 Create and Thrive Teaching Artist, a 2022 Nancy Ludmerer Flash Fiction Fellow, a 2021 Humanities Fellow with Many Languages One Voice, and an alum of the 5th Woman Fellowship in Knoxville, TN and the 202Creates Residency Program in Washington, DC. 
 

Recent work can be found in Electric Lit, Ghost Parachute, and HAD among others. Her work has been anthologized and nominated for various awards.

In 2017, her poem "Seashell" was nominated for Best of the Net. In 2019, her essay "For Women, the Sin of Indulgence is the Worst Sin Imaginable" was selected as one of Electric Lit's "favorite essays about food." In 2022, her story "Her Kingdom Come" was selected to appear in the "Best Microfiction 2022" anthology by judge Tania Hershman and her stories "A Fine Girl" and "Each Casual Violence" were nominated for a Pushcart Prize by Stanchion and Cobra Milk respectively. In February 2025, her chapbook of flash fiction stories, "Ladies, Ladies, Ladies," was published by Stanchion. One piece from this work, "Wild Geese," was also nominated for a Pushcart Prize. 

She is currently at work on a long-form nonfiction piece exploring nature, spirituality, and community among other projects, and is appreciative of the various fellowships and residencies that have provided time and space for creative rest and reflection.

A passionate advocate for the arts and community, Kris is the founder of MoonLit, an organization that, since 2017, has creatively connected community through accessible literary workshops and programming. She is also the co-curator of Art Needs Us with Trish Fancher. Kris is an MFA candidate in Nonfiction and Graduate Teaching Assistant at the George Mason University and the Assistant Studio Manager at Past Tense Yoga Studio. Kris is also a certified yoga, Pilates, and Zumba instructor and enjoys crafting sequences that combine energetic breath work with joyful movement. She is grateful to have spent her professional years working, consulting, teaching for, and volunteering with literary, cultural, and wellness institutions around the country.
